| THE CRITICS' GALLERY POKAZ |
|
The Critics’ Gallery Pokaz (Show) was founded in the second half of the 1970s. With its programme, it fit into the current of artistic discussions which inspired the activity of contemporary authors’ galleries. From the beginning of its existence, it has taken up a small space in the annex of the building at Krakowskie Przedmieście 20/22. Until December 1981, it operated under the name of Critics’ Gallery, in the 80s Pokaz Gallery, and after political changes, from October 1989 onward as The Critics' Gallery Pokaz. The gallery carries out a programme which allows for the presentation of artists, events and artistic themes which art critics find interesting. It remains a place open to various tendencies, problems of modern art, and diverse manifestations of artistic life. All kinds of artistic expression find their representation here: painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic arts, tapestries, posters, photography, installations, performance, and video art. Expositions, which number about twelve a year, create a series of authors’ original presentations, which try to catch the essence of events happening “here and now”. The formula of the gallery’s functioning is defined by the personalities of collaborating critics and art historians. These included and include: Elżbieta Dzikowska, Magdalena Hniedziewicz, Kinga Kawalerowicz, Wiesława Wierzchowska, Danuta Wróblewska, Szymon Bojko, Jerzy Brukwicki, Maciej Gutowski, Wojciech Skrodzki, Mieczysław Szewczuk, and Aleksander Wojciechowski, as well as many other representatives of diverse artistic circles, galleries and museums. In the years 1993-2004, the gallery published the magazine „Pokaz”. The Club of Artistic Criticism „Pokaz” affiliated with the Gallery has awarded its yearly artistic prize since 2004. Up until now, the winners of the “Pokaz” prize have been: Jolanta Owidzka, Krystyna Piotrowska, Krystiana Robb – Narbutt, Jerzy Kalina, Jarosław Kozakiewicz, Andrzej Wasilewski, and Xawery Wolski and the editorial staff of the “Raster” magazine. The Critics' Gallery Pokaz remains an extremely interesting place to exchange viewpoints and ideas. |
